    30-30 - 120 yards max

Why does everyone I tell that I'm getting a 30-30 336, emphatically state that it's a 120 yard max firearm? I'm expecting at least two hundred with a 1x4 scope. What have I forgotten since I shot 30-30 years ago?

Because they have never shot one...... I killed a deer with a 30-30 and the Leverevolution ammo when it first came out to see if it really was a 300 yard gun. It is! Straight on shot at 298 stem to stern dead in its tracks.

my 30-30 w/5d williams peep is dead on elevation wise at 200 yds sighted in 3'' high at 100 yds....probably 6" low at 250. Knowing the offsets that makes it a 250 yd deerslayer with a peep sight.....and deer are pretty much a thin skinned animal.....learn to shoot it and you'll be alright........Mike

lol, thanks Mike - I'm not worried about me, I'm just shocked at everyone's reaction to me telling them I got a 30-30. When did this myth form that a 30-30 is only a 120yd gun?

My first deer was with a 30-30 with scope around 225 yards , and bullet passed thru performed flawless...

Hey Drift - the .30/30 became a 120-yard rifle when the Mega-Magnum Fire Breather was introduced shooting a boat-tailed spitzer at 9 gazillion fps muzzle velocity. From what I hear the rumor that anyone has ever even killed a deer with anything less is suspect.

What!? You mean I don't need a .338 Lapua to kill today's armored whitetails?

The 30-30 ballistics and trajectory are listed at better than some of the favorite cartridges in this forum.
FWIW the 1884 Springfield trap door Buffington sight had various choices with a battle sight of 266 yards up to 2000 yards for a 45-70, 405 grain bullet black powder cartridge. The cant to the left on the sight was to compensate for the twist in the barrel. I don't think you can see a prairie dog at 2000 yards, but it might put fear in someone close to that range.
