a 30-30 fired with a 170gr projectile has more energy at 100yds than a 44 mag. handgun fired with a 240gr projectile does at the muzzle.......

You Know on second thought you might want to get one of those 416 rem mags to be assured of taking down a 21st century deer, you can just send that old out dated 30-30 to me for safe keeping.

This is not an attack against anyone here, but I will say this.... Those that constantly bash magnums are on the same coin just opposite sides of the argument... Research a cartridge before purchasing and try not to listen to ole wives tails.... miracle shots, idiotic shots, drt, 40 yard dash, all kinds of things that have NOTHING to do with a cartridge gets blamed or attributed to one.... the same can be said with firearms.... Then there are those that have to berate what someone uses in order to make what they are using better... don't fall into these traps there are many fine cartridges out there that's a real joy

Some people focus upon ballistic charts to determine lethal distances. This of course is a fallacy because a big game bullet which strikes the chest organs and expands quickly will cause massive tissue damage. Death to the animal is eminent. My longest shot armed with my 30-30 carbine was approx 175 yards or so. At the shot, the buck ran about the length of two school buses and toppled in mid stride.

In summary, distance is related to velocity and energy but does not tell the entire story about killing power. Accurate shooting and rapid bullet expansion are more important than figures upon paper charts.

"There are none so bigoted as the really ignorant who labor under the belief that they know all there is to know about their special subject." J. O. Kenneman

"The 30-30 is a 120 yard gun." Another myth regurgitated by the ignorant and uninformed.

Have you ever noticed what a 30-30 bullet does when striking a steel plate (dinger), at 400 or 500 yards?

    And, a .22LR won't kill at 100 yards!
    Know any other good stories?

And, sad to say, gun shops are over run with "experts" educated beyond their intelligence.
Never heard one say, "this 30-30 will do you fine"

I figure it's a moot point... for people that only go out and hunt one or two weekends a year,
120 yards is "pushing the envelope" anyways.
I gotta figure there's something about sitting around a local
gun shop, sipping coffee and BS'ng several mornings a week
that makes some people "experts" on hunting rifles.
Be interesting to know how many sets of horns these
jack wagons actually collected in their days.
I'd be happy to show em my pile.
