be When I was 12 and did not know it could not be done, shot a deer at around 300 yards, iron sights, one shot one kill, of course, had spent a couple of summers banging away at woodchucks way out there with that 30-30 336A and knew where to aim, these days know it can't be done. To be real figure it to be a 200-yard rifle, maybe further with the new FTX loads.

I shoot mine out to 200 yards off hand at silhouette matches. See guys ringing gongs at 300 yards with theirs.

You should only talk to people with actual experience like here.
Or, for fun, ask those sophomores to demonstrate their shooting for you.

Because too many people equate emphatic beliefs with knowledge and intelligence.

my brother, myself and an old retired law man were standing in a driveway and looking across the road at a cut corn field. to the very back of the field was about 200yds the old man said if a deer or himself was at the back of that field you would have no chance of killing either with a 30-30 my brother looked at him and said, if you were at the back of that field and mike (me)shot at you there would be a funeral. my closest neighbor that is a deer hunter says a 30-30 is no deer rifle. I told him somebody forgot to tell all those deer I killed with them that. people have crazy beliefs.....

this was just discussed about how legendary outdoorsman Jack O'Connor was writing about sighting 30-30 for 150 yards and real life capability of 30-30 going back decades. People don't realize exactly how much damage can be done by a 170 grain chunk of lead traveling at 2100 feet per second. I remember when I was a kid shooting 22's across corn fields and on the box of ammo it said something about taking care as the bullet will travel a mile. well that is only 40 grains of lead. Way too many armchair outdoorsmen these days, all those corn fields are now subdivisions.

How about "It's a brush gun, only good for close up shots" Just for grins a few years ago I put 5 shots just under 3" at 300 yds...that's under an inch at 100 yds, the guy that commented that "This ought to be good" when I sat down at the 300 yd bench didn't say a word after seeing my target...packed his stuff up and left!

There is no one as fixed and emphatic in his opinions as the ignorant man. Those who say such things about the .30-30 are clearly unaware of the fact that when introduced the .30 WCF was regarded as a flat-shooting long-range thunderbolt -- which it was (and is) compared to the blackpowder rounds of the day. It remains one of the most useful and effective cartridges you can employ today.

I disagree with the OP. When mentioning my very recent waffle top purchase, my buddy to whom I sold my Sierra 2000's to (because at the time I had no .30WCF) and won't sell them back told me it was a 150 yard gun. That's from a hunter and reloader.
