Formakos, the cases have to have .36" (oddly enough) trimmed off, which is most of the original neck. I'm not sure what you mean by "standard case trimmer", but I use a Forster Classic which I power with a cordless drill. Done in this manner it takes about 1 minute to trim 3 cases. After trimming all that's left is to chamfer/deburr the case mouths and run them through the .356/.358 Win sizing die set to the proper height.

I should note here that I discovered that after 2 or 3 firings, cases can retain just enough expansion near the base (because the sizing die must be adjusted high) to cause some drag in the chamber. The fix is an RPP base sizing die, which we will provide with converted rifles, along with a sizing die setup gauge for easily attaining proper head space. These may seem like unusual end-arounds, but they allow RPP and our customers to avoid purchasing costly custom reamers and dies.

Miner, speaking of bears, there are a few pills in the 250gr class that might make very good bear medicine, but I haven't played around with them yet. The Hawk 250 FP is interesting, but other designs less so. My predictive model, which is has been pretty spot-on with this cartridge, tells me 2300fps+ would be attainable with the Hawk, from a 24" barrel. I think a bullet in the 230-240gr range would be a better compromise for large/dangerous game, but currently we don't have that option.

At the opposite end of the scale there are the light .357" options like a 125 XTP, which could be propelled to a stunning 3300fps+, but I have no idea whether such a bullet could hold up long enough to find a target at those velocities. Be fun to find out though. Talk about a varmint grenade...

Ok, so look here. I probably wouldn't be the only customer so what are we looking at, 1895 or 336 as the basis for the project?

Your barrels both blue and stainless option?

I am sorry for the Hijack

I would definitely start with the 336/.30-30 platform. The only thing the .444 has in common with the 1895 is the heavier barrel profile. Conversion is similar to the process we use for the .410. New barrel, bulge the mag tube (or install a factory sporter tube if additional length is not desired), open up the ejection port, and sort out timing and feeding.

We can get Douglas barrels in both chromoly and stainless, though the SS units get a $70 premium over the steel.

$70 ain't much over a rotgut blued one. I'm assuming here a Remlin SS would be a candidate.

No reason we can't start with a Remlin. Occasionally there's additional labor to deal with pre-existing issues, but they can be sorted.

Thanks for posting the ballistics chart T.S. Looks like pretty much a point blank hold to at least 250yds. That oughta do a doe.

Yes we could use a SS model and then replace the barrel with a new Douglas match grade barrel in stainless.
