Re: Why doesn't the 30-30 get respect?

I think its a when we are given a range of options, such as in the modern world, we always want the next model up. It amazes me the number of hunters buying super flat shooting, high velocity firearms with overkill scopes when most of their shooting will be within 80m. I think somehow the 30-30 has lost respect due to the assumption that because its been around for a long time it surely has been superceeded. In reality it's a great (and accurate) calibre for a wide range of game within 250m. For me, buying a Marlin 30-30 made shooting fun again.

    +1 Even though I do.

Looking at your profile, I see that you are in New Zealand. I'd expect metric from someone living there.

Besides that, it isn't exactly rocket science to convert meters to yards, ya' know. We had to do it in the Army, after all. I can quickly do it in my head, close enough anyway.

80 Meters? Sounds like spitting distance for a .30-30 to me. The magnificent .30 WCF can dump a whitetail at any distance that I can see well enough place the shot accurately.

Does it do as well down under in N.Z. as it does in New England? Or do you have to hold the gun upside down to get it to work? (just kidding...)

Good Luck and please let us see what deer look like in N.Z. when you bag one.

It should but the bullet spins left as it leaves the barrel.

Hey Earplay, this is exactly what I wanted to read. I'm thinking to trade my Rem 700 in 30-06 for a lever action capable to put down hog and red deer at 200 to 250 meters ... I'm sorry, between 218.7227 and 273.4033 yards .
I was hoping a Marlin 336 chambered in 30-30 would do the job. Apparently it would .

    Cheers

Re: Why doesn't the 30-30 get respect?

Earplay and Kaweskar I have down graded my power in cartridge and scope at this time I'm working my 336XLR-35R fitted with a Redfield 2X7X33 scope. I also shoot 30/30W and W32spl. Both have equal ballistic but 250 meters or 273.4033 yards is a little out to far for the 30/30W. The leverevolution cartridge will give you more distance for deer kills out to 300 yards http://www.hornady.com/store/30-30-W...EVERevolution/ but the 170gr. FP http://www.hornady.com/store/30-30-Win-170-gr-FP/ lax the foot pound energy to humanely kill a deer over 215 yards. The 30 30 Win 170gr. has a point blank range of 215 yards for reliable deer kills. This can be better with the use of the LE cartridge. I'm basing this on a 1000 foot pound which a legal standard in most state for deer kills.

But for hog you might want the 170gr.FP. and as a dual rifle without sighting in for the LE cartridge. keep you shot within 215 yards.
