A .30-30 caliber is a BIG Game Hunter?

I've recently heard about a man (lucky him! :P ) who claims to have killed a Moose with a .30-30 at 64 yards. I thought the little ol' thutty-thutty was only a small game up to a black bear gun. PLEASE DON'T PREACH TO ME ABOUT SHOT PLACEMENT!!! I know that's what really matters. However, I didn't think anyone would hunt for moose with a .30-30. Let alone kill it with one shot @ 64 yards! SO now I am pressed to ask, what is the largest huntable animal a .30-30 can & will bring down with one shot at the most being 75 yards. I'm not trying to talk about perfect shot placement. Here's how I can explain it: A .22 CALIBER BULLET CAN KILL A GIANT GRIZZLY BEAR BUT WOULD YOU HUNT GRIZZLYS WITH A .22. NO.NONONONONONONONONONO. That's how I explain it to people. What will the 3030 take down that's a BIG BIG animal?? WHAT IS ITS MAX POTENTIAL?

REALLY! You're not just saying stuff about physical possibilities and VERY PERFECT SHOT PLACEMENT are you? Would you hunt an elephant with a .3030?

A thump to the noggin with a 30-30 will drop just about anything.

No, but I would with my .303 British. If I was rushed by an elephant, and a 30-30 is what I had. I would shot him with it.

Actually I would not hesitate to take my 30-30 on any North American game hunt.

.30-30s have been known to take down grizzly bears with one shot.

Yeah? Well you take your .30-30 and I'll take my .375H&H and we'll see who's still standing.
I wouldn't trust my life with a .30-30 against a grizzly/brown and anyone who thinks they would is just kidding themselves!!!

Hypothetical versus real. The 30-30 can be successfully used on near anything. The question is, would you knowingly go up against a moose-elephant-rhino-grizzly-chipmunk with a 30-30? For much of the large game, there are more suitable calibers. As to the original question, there can be no definitive answer, just too many variables to consider. A 30-30 may kill Mbogo, or it may xxxx him off, either way he will more than likely have plenty of time to turn the hunter into mush. That would not be a good way to end such a hypothetical discussion.

I wouldn't have a problem hunting moose with a 30-30. Keep the distance short (less than 100 yards) and pick your shots appropriately, and one shouldn't have too much difficulty. I wouldn't deliberately go after a large bear with one, but I came face to face with one unexpectedly, I'd rather have a 30-30 than nothing.
