I came across one of these during my travels yesterday. About 70% finish on the metal - no rust or pitting - VG wood but no finish left (maybe these came with oiled stocks) brass saddle ring and 30-30 caliber. They were asking $199 but I think I can get it for $150.
I don't really need another 30-30 but I thought that it might make a good project gun with say a 16 1/2" barrel.
Any thoughts on value?

I'd jump all over it for $150.
In fact, I've been looking for that configuration myself. They have the long, capped forearm and those that I've seen are walnut
They can be made into very classy 16.5" carbines.
Can't get much for $150. If you want the project there is not much better way to get into it.
I'm keeping my eye out for a 35 Rem in a condition and price exactly what you describe. I also want to make it a shorty! My goal is 36" overall and 6 lbs. Don't know if that is possible or not, but that's the project I have rattling around in my mind.
I'm being patient because I just bought a 30-30 for my daughter and want to buy a scope for her. Tapping into the family account for another rifle it will have to be a deal I can't pass up, or my wife would let me have it up side the head. Then again the pain goes away in a few minutes, but the Marlin will last a lifetime!
You must see what you shoot...or you might shoot what you don't see!
