I posted a thread in regards to coverting a 444 to a wildcat. I think I have decided on a 7-30 Waters or 7mm STE. Anyone done one of these and if so who did you use for a gunsmith?
I would also be interested in slimming down by changing the mag tube and forearm
All info appreciated

I have a copy of an article by Waters on the 7-30 written in 2002. The rifle used for that article was a Savage 99. I have a 14" barreled TC in 7-30 and I like the round in the TC. Killed one deer with the factory load. I use 30-30 brass in it. I have been tempted to build one on a 336A with a bad barrel that I have.
The 7mmSTE is an improved 7mm-08 with a rim. Simpson first tried a standard 7mm-08 reamer and wasn't happy with the velocities so he then tried the improved version. He claimed velocities of 2700 FPS with a 139 grain bullet and 2900 with a 120 grain bullet. I am going to build one soon.

Thank you Guys for the info.
I have already found 400 heads of the 139 Hornadys. I need to find some Noslers next.
Sitka, who did the conversion for you? This is my biggest concern, that and if I need/should change the mag tube.

Thank you SIKAfor the info. Though the STE looks like it gains a few more fps, the 7-30 looks easier for dies, brass, etc...
If this goes it will probably begin early next year. I also agree I like the 1/2 mag of the 308 and the size will probably keep the weight down over the tube on the 444
