I am considering trying this Marlin lever in .256 Magnum as my coyote/bobcat predator hunting rifle. Mostly thinking about doing it to be different from the rest of the club members who are either on bolt actions or AR 15 actions. Haven't any experience with the Model 62 aside from having shot one many years ago target practice prior to a deer hunt. Anyone have current experience with this combination and what ammo are you shooting?
Only fact. ammo made is 60 gr. HP at 2800 fps. I felt this load/bullet too light for deer so I a dumped deer with the biggest 75 gr. HP I could find. Sierra. Figured that the varmit hp would expand at slower .256 velocities. got the deer at 60 yds but bullet went through. Load from hornady #4 manual years ago. 13.5 gr. 2400 powder CCI 400 primer winchester brass. About 2350 fps. Never busted bobcat with it but 60 gr. 25-20 at 2000 fps does it well so figure the .256 will too. Loaded up some 85 gr. blue tipped nosler ballistic tips bot not fired them yet. Started with 12 grs. H-4227 for about 2000 fps according to manual. Hopes this helps. Have fun and bangaway.
Those were cool guns. I shot one in .30 Carbine when I was young. I always wanted one, but they're rare as hen's teeth in my part of the world.
Great little rifles, jump on that puppy!

I've never seen one in .256 Win, but I've seen the 30 Carbine, and the rimfire versions. They were really a good idea, and I don't know why they were discontinued by Marlin, excepting for the marketing. I always wondered why they didn't chamber it for 357 along with the 256. I'm sure they would probably take the 357 pressure pretty much.
I'm using 85gr Meisters over Trail Boss. It's an ideal cartridge for what you are thinking.
