Don't ya just hate data that takes a dip!?! This I have not experienced with my 356W, though I have seen it with other cartridges at times. 358 Win's observation of a poor powder indicator may have some validity. I have used a bunch of 4198 and 4895 in my 356W without a hiccup (both flavors of each) and increases in powder always give an increase in velocity. 2550fps is obtainable in my Winchester BB94 with a 200gr jacketed (type unspecified) without a lot of fanfare. Yes, try a new battery. Also, did you check each shot in the string ie was the extreme spread realistic? I get a bad velocity out of my Chrony every now and then, so I note each shot for permanent records to aid in analyzing "what happened".

    Jeff,
Of the 4198 and 4895 have you gotten better accuracy with IMR or Hod powder?

    Thanks, Terry

IMR (though i HATE stick powders) seems to always give better performance for accuracy, H usually delivers a tad more velocity. I think H goes through my powder measure easier and I tend to rush my trickler a little with the IMR. I may have to invest in a Lyman Auto-scale that ToNY put up the pics of on one of these threads. That may be ideal for what I try to accomplish. Same with the 4895, H for velocity and IMR for accuracy, though really, there isn't very much velocity difference. Just enough to say so.

    ToNY,

You post nice pics, bro! Looks like you may be pulling one shot out of each group. Question: where does the first one go from a cold barrel? That may be the one that is "outside" of the little cluster. IF SO, that is where you want to be sighting in as when you hunt, your shot will be from a cold barrel. Good stuff!! Thanks!

My Lyman auto-scale works best with stick powder. I have to load it slowly for ball powder. But it has no problems with all powders in between. To be honest I would say the first shot is in the 10 ring which is okay with me. But that's not all the time. Sometimes it is "x" ring. The next time I load up for the 356W. the powder will be H4198. But until I test it My user load is H4895.

I think the hunting rifle for this year will be the 336XLR-35R. I'm having a problem with the 338 express either with the Hornady dies or the cases. It seem either the cases are to thin by the neck to hold the bullet tight enough or the die doesn't compress the neck enough to hold the bullet tight enough. I spoke to a tech at hornady and we went over it measurement by measurement and found nothing wrong. But the bullet are lose in the neck with some cases but not all. I'm thinking of buying a set of RCBS 338 express dies to see if it will solve the problem.

Sure sounds like the dies are ovevrsized, but if the measurements check, then doesn't it have to be that the brass is thin? I had this problem with the sizing die for my 8x57. Some of the bullets you could pull out with your fingers, some were perfectly tight. Bought a new sizing die and solved that problem. The Trading Post in Old Town, Maine loaned me a die to "see if I was right" and i was, so I bought the die. No problems with accuracy in that Persian Carbine since I changed out the sizing die. Though your measurements seem to check out, it still might be the die is "too generous" for the brass. Sometimes you can buy a set of dies cheaper than you can buy a single die. Good LUCK!
