    Tang Peep for 1893?

My Marlin 1893 38/55 Smokeless (1903) is drilled for a tang peep sight. I don't know if a previous owner removed it or it never had one. I've searched for an original replacement and have discovered they are nearly non-existent.

What other options are there? I'm sure I'm not the first 1893 owner to be confronted with this issue. Any help with this would be appreciated.

My 1893 .30-30 (1904) is drilled for one also and it doesn't look as if there was ever one mounted either. Have you tried Montana Vintage arms?

Marbles and Lyman have been making them for 140+ years and the new ones today are updates of the originals. Brownells carries Marbles for under $150 and Lymans for under $100. Marbles has windage adjustments while Lyman does not. I have Marbles on all of mine except my 38-55 336 conversion which has a Lyman.

A Soule type tang sight is really the choice for over for 500yds but the Marbles is easily capable of 500.

Hey there DD -- The problem with the Marbles tang sights is that for the last 140+ years the 1893's bolt has been crashing into them. The Lyman's are better in that respect, but don't provide windage in the sight.

As a note: Marlin drilled and tapped the tangs of the 1893's for tang sights, but the sight itself was an extra, not standard equipment. Best regards. Wind

    Hi DD

Do you have this on an 1893? I went through this about a year ago and I found that on the 1893, the Marbles and Lyman tang sights will get hit by the bolt when the lever is cycled. Marbles at least is aware of this but has no plans to change their design.

Wind has been working with I think Montana Arms vernier sights and I heard they have made or will be making a base that will work on the 93.

My 336 conversion has the Lyman and my 'smith clearanced the end of the bolt with a round file and stone to clear the stem of the sight.

I had a 1936 (an updated square bolt 93) in 32-40 (another conversion) for a number of years with a Marbles tang sight. My gunsmith did the same on a spare bolt. The original bolt was untouched and I still have it even though that rifle was sold.

I plan to mount a Marbles and clearance the bolt on the 1893 I recently acquired.

    Here is the 336 conversion:

Hey there DD -- In my economy I would never modify the rifle to accommodate the sight. A stock 1893, and '93 bolt will contact the Marbles sight stem. I have had great success modifying Montana Vintage Arms sight bases to allow for the long 1893 bolt. If you had used the Marbles tang sight called out for the Marlin 336, you would be unable to remove the bolt with the sight installed. Best regards. Wind
