Indoor testing and sighting in pictures

The nearest outdoor range from my door is 68 miles for high power rifles. There is a indoor range only 22 miles away. I go there to work up a load or just to kill time. Today is the first time I put my 338MX to my personal test. I'm happy to say that the warranty repairs is on the money. Smooth cycling through the whole magazine and the Nikon muzzleloader scope works well too. The target by the butt is at 75 ft. 338 200 gr.FTX--WLR primer--AA2520--powder--charge 44.0 gr. The target by the forehand is at 75 ft. 338 200 gr. FTX--WLR primer--WIN.--760--powder--charge 46.5 Holding dead center aim I adjusted the scope to hit 2" below dead center. Using the cartridge with a charge of win 760. 46.5 gr with noticeable recoil. I switch over to AA-2520 charge of 44.0 gr. recoil was less (no change in scope adjustment) same aim shot 1/2" to 3/4" high. In the bush shots out to 30 yards, either load will work. But in a clearing out to 100 yards this would have to be work on. I hope next week.

Have you chronographed these loads? I've used 42 gr of AA2520 with a 200 gr FTX in the 35 Remington. My load with it is 41 gr of AA2520. I'm just wondering what velocity you get with 44 gr in the 338. 42 gr was definitely max in the 35, I'm wondering what would be a max load in the 338.

Normally, if you are right on at 25 yards, you will be right on at 100 yards.

Halwg No I don't have a chronograph. I should buy one but I don't get to the range that often to justify owning one. I rely on data tested by bullet and powder companies. Hornady data for AA-2520 has max. charge at 44.4 with velocity of 2400 fps. fired from the XLR 24" barrel. I have the MX 22" barrel. I judge my loads at the range by consistent accuracy and smooth action operation. Which rifle do you use 42 gr of AA2520 with a 200 gr FTX in the 35 Remington is it the 336 35Rem. or the Rem. 760. How did you come to this charge?
Halwg I have a Rem. 760 in 35 Rem and all ingredients to duplicate your load. Is it safe in your Rem 760? Would like to try it. Hornady's data max. is 38.8 gr. velocity 2000 fps.

    AA 2520 26.5 gr. 29.5 gr. 32.6 gr. 35.7 gr. 38.8 gr.

FredT I had three reason why I went to a indoor range and one is it's close two try out my loads three sight in my new scope. I always sight in at 25 yards at first then 50 and then at 100 yard. If hunting season should creep up on me, I will feel confident with being sighted in at 25 yards. But would feel better at 50 yards. 50 yards in NYS woodland hunting is realistic.

Close is good. When I lived in VA I had to drive 45 minutes to an outdoor range. That got old.
I have hunted NYS, near the town of Liberty and Monticello. Lots and lots of turkey. Also hunted West Point Military Academy. Now there was some nice deer hunting.

FredT I know the area [Liberty, Monticello. West Point Military Academy] but every hunt there. I rented a cabin in Hancock NY not to far form Liberty for open gun 11-19-10 to 11-24-2010 six nights. It is on a gulf course and lots of state land around there. Cabin renter only can hunt the gulf course and the tree line around the golf course. I must sight my 338MX in 3" high at 100 yards this will put it dead on at 200 yards using factory LE. I'm anticipating long shots there. Besides the midrange between muzzle and 100 yards would be within a 10" circle. At the next sight-in I will see how accurate my statement is and will post the results.

Sounds like a good game plan.

I can't enen imagine what it must be like to live in an area where I have to drive 60 miles to shoot in a indoor range. I can drive 3 blocks and shoot in a friends field, but mostly drive about 5 miles and shoot in a friends pasture where we have a bench and target boards set up. It would drive me crazy to live there.

That is pretty funny. I have a few private places i can hunt, but opening weekend this year is in what is kind of an upscale summer camp catering to Orthodox Jews. I will be setting up my ground blind in an smallish open field bracketed by tennis court, handball court and parking lot. The plus is that it is a 2 minute walk from the house and I can probably back my truck up to the deer. Last year was a DRT 30' shot. Ironically, I can't practice there. Too populated. I have to drive 5 minutes to an outdoor range with 25/50/100/200 yard setups. It costs $25/year to be a member.
