How are your 308mx grouping for you who own one? And whats the affective range for this caliber on whitetail deer? Actually Im more concerned with trajectory than whitetail taking range. I would most likely use it for coyotes anyway. And one day maybe go out of state to hunt deer with it.
Thanks
Daryl
I would like to ask another question about brass being available. Is it hard to find?
Thanks
Daryl

I have shot two deer past 300 yards with mine. One at 365 yards and one at 397 yards. they group just fine. Here are some of the groups.
300 yard group.
300 yard group.
100 yard group
Not a group, but a 150 yard victim.
500 yard 2 shot group..ammo was in short supply thus the 2 shot group.
100 yard group
If you are looking at an out of state hunt...they work well for these also
I think Midway is starting to sell brass, but you will be hard pressed to come up with a handload that will out perform the Leverevolution ammo. I have handloaded for over 30 years, but for this rifle I will hunt with factory ammo.
They are real consistant shooters. Take the plunge Daryl![]()

That is some real fine shooting there big med. Thanks for the reply. Five hundred yards ,yeah Id be lucky to hit a 48 in flat screen.

I've been envious of those groups since I first saw them posted here. My gun shoots groups like that second 300 yard group at 100 yards. I only have 2 boxes of shells through it so it may get better. I'm waiting for the chance to shoot it on a windless day.
I like the ballistics, the soft recoil, and the feel of this gun but need better groups or it will be sold. Don't let me discourage you, however. I seem to be the rare owner of one of these that isn't a tackdriver.

Have you done any work to the trigger? You may consider putting in a wild west Trigger, or doing a little work on your factory trigger. VTDW did some work on the tenons that hold the mag tube and forend and really tightened up his groups, you could always contact him and I'm ssure he could give you some advice.

Thanks Big,
I actually did try a float job on my .35 to free the mag tube. The gun shot pretty well already so I don't know how much I really accomplished. Shoots great now.
I was reluctant to dig into the .308 til I check it out a bit more. I would cherish a gun that shoots like yours does. Some of my .30-30's and my 1894 are stellar.

Both are easy to perform. In fact, I did the tennon dovetail and mag tube dovetail thing on my 45-70 yesterday along with the trigger on Pappy's thuty-thuty.Originally Posted by big medicine
If you haven't shot many rounds thru it yet that may be all you need IF you can afford the ammo. That last time I shot mine was over a year ago IIRC.

Could you post a couple of pics? when I did the .35 I freed the muzzle end of the mag tube then cut a notch in the underside of the barrel and the top of the mag tube, Put a bit of copper tubing over the forearm pin to keep the mag tube from spitting out. I've not taken the .308 apart to assess how it's assembled. Haven't tried to dovetail anything. I'd like to see how you did it.
Thanks

I have no pics but here it is. Remove the screw that holds the mag tube. Watch out that the cap and spring doesn't go flying across the room.Take out the insert from the dovetail and hold it flat on a fine file and file like heck, turn it around and file like heck some more and reinstall. What this does is to allow the insert to move very easily from both side to side and back and forth which eliminates a pressure point. You should be able to move the insert along with the mag tube from side to side with very light finger pressure. ALSO, make sure there is clearance in the forend cap where the mag tube goes thru the hole. If not, take a dremel to it and dress it with cold blue of some kind.
