I recently turned down double what you paid and now after thinking about it I probably did wrong by doing so, mine too is an 81 yr model .357 with less than 30 rds thru it. You did very good !

When was the last year of the gold trigger? What makes these older 1894's seem to be worth more than newer ones? My wife works for Wal-mart so I get a 10 per cent discount on guns and I priced a 1894 C for 510.00 out the door. I know a little about older Smith and Wessons but the Marlins I am still learning

    CaryG,
Very nice lookin shootin irons you have there

They {1894 357's} are popular for {SASS/CAS} Cowboy Action Shooting, they are fun to shoot and are "relatively" cheap to shoot, and are a great gun for young shooters and women or anyone thats recoil sensitive. Marlin was bought out by Remington, and lets just say there QC isnt what it should be "Yet"...
Those are all some of the reasons why they command a higher price tag.
I bought an 80' about oh 4 or 5 months ago and paid in the neighborhood of $600, i was lookin for awhile and kept finding some, but alot were beatup and they still wanted a hefty price for them. I found one in very good shape and jumped on it. Now if i could just bring myself to enjoy shootin it as much as the little 1894P i bought i would be OK, but the 357 isnt feeling too much love these days since the 44mag came along. I almost think it should be sold and given the chance it needs to get shot like it deserves....
I sure do like the handling of the little 94's, but something about the 44mag that just tickles my fancy more than the 357 ever has . I also have two handguns to go along with the 94's, {GP100 and S&W 29} but dont you just know that the poor GP sits in the safe and the 29 gets the action worked way more....
I dont want to steal this thread, but Which do you fellers like more 357mag or 44mag CaryG, do you have a 44mag, and if so how o you like it compared to the 357?

Nice find and welcome to MO, from west TX. I love my .357 1894c. It will eat through some ammo, as it is a hoot to shoot! Sure would like to hear how she's does at the range for you. Congrats and welcome aboard!

Hello CaryG, welcome to the forum and congrats on a great buy.
I got my 1894C (2000) just a couple months ago and loved to shoot her, really a breeze.
I also own a 1894 in .44 Magnum and is my to go gun for hunting hogs in the bushes. It wears Skinners peep sight.
As for answering my friend GB, I love the two guns and wouldn't part with either. What I want to do is to scope the 1894C (357) and give it a shot at deer hunting.

    Cheers

Gotta ask the question, what do most with a 1894 357 do with it? Hunt, self defense? Plink,? or what? or just another have to have gun. Thanks
