Reloading 45 Colt with Unique question

I picked up some Unique powder to load for a few cals. Been hearing good thing of this Unique.

I have (2) 1894 CB's, a 20" & 24 inch and would like to try out Unique in them. What Unique loads are working out for you?
The bullets I have to load up are 240gr jacketed HP's. I'll be changing to cast, but for now I gotta shoot up these jacketed HP's.

Thanks in advance for your results.

When my 1894 was a 44 mag it would do its best groups with 8.7gr of unique and a 200gr cast. When I changed barrels out to a Micro Groove 45 Colt it doesn't seem to like Unique that much but really seems to shine with Trail Boss and 250gr cast so that is now my main combo for light loads. Other people have great luck with Unique however so its very possible your mileage will vary from mine.

Unique also works well in the 44-40 which has similar case capacity.

When I used a CB in 45 Colt in CAS,I used 6.0gr Unique with a 200gr cast bullet.Below that level the loads got very dirty shooting(residue).I believe the best accuracy with that bullet was around 7.0gr Unique.

So for this 45 Colt load, I should be well within the safe zone loading 10gr. of Unique under a 240gr bullet?

While trying to research loading the 45 (Long) Colt I found this great reading artical some might be interested in.

I've shot 9.5 gr Unique with a 200 gr. bullet for Cowboy Long Range (pistol caliber at 100 yards). I thought it would be a pretty stout load but it didn't feel like it.

There is some good info here Reloading the .45 Colt Page

Thanks Doc, I knew I had seen that site before, just couldn't find it again.
Looks like I should try 8 to 8.5gr of Unique from what I see there.

I use 8.0gr Unique in my Rossi 92 with a 16.5" barrel. With less than 7.0gr I had a lot of unburned powder/residue. Even experienced some hot ashes flying back in my face from the breech on occasion. Bumping up to 8.0gr made everything nice and it is accurate. FYI, that is with a Suter's Choice 250RNFP, Starline new/used brass, and WLP.

    Happy loading!

11.5 grains of unique behind a 247 FN plain base gives me 1485 fps. This is a Ruger/TC max load for the Lyman 250 grain FN so approach with caution. Very good accuracy and no leading when sized to .454 for the Marlin.
