    357 Maximum Point Blank Range?

Does anyone know what the Maximum Point Blank Range for a 357 magnum with 158gr. rn out of my 1894c would be if you were dealing with a 6" diameter area. I know some of you guys on here are really good with balistics and hope that one of you can help me.

Re: 357 Maximum Point Blank Range?

Good timing...I was just working with a friends T/C Contender in 357 today.

Shooting a 158 grain semi wadcutter at 1,350 fps the 357 is a really flat shooter...much flatter than I expected.

Hitting milk jugs at 100 yards was easy...sighted 2.5 inches high at 50 yards it was dead on at 100. With this load it fell below 6" at about 135 yards.

Your particular load may be different though, you'll need to know the exact bullet and its muzzle velocity to get a decent prediction on its trajectory.

This is from Hornady's On-Line Ballistics Calculator

Making a few assumptions from my Speer #12, I think the numbers are close to what you are seeking to know. It would tell me I could hold dead - on to 150 yards and hold top of back out to 200 yards - perfect for Eastern or thick type hunting. I would want a longer zero for open country hunting. JMHO HTH

A little late, but if anyone is still interested I went to handloads.com and did a calculation for the Buffalo Bore 158 grain load for .357 magnum. I assumed a muzzle velocity of 2125 feet per second, which is actually a few fps less than what they measured in an 18 inch barrel Marlin. I assumed a ballistic coefficient of 0.168, which is what Buffalo Bore listed for this load. I also assumed the sights are 1.65 inches above the centerline of the bore. This is what I measured for my Scoped Rossi '92 in 0.357 magnum, but open sights would be somewhat less than this. I also made some assumptions about altitude (4500 feet) and temperature (60 F).

If the rifle is sighted in at 125 yards it will shoot high by 1.25 inches at 75 yards, and 1.0 inches high at 100 yards. It will shoot low by 1.8 inches at 150 yards and low by 2.7 inches as 160 yards. Based on these numbers, and considering only the trajectory, one could conservatively assume the maximum point blank range is about 160 yards.

Energy will have dropped to about 800 foot pounds at 160 yards, which some people might consider a little low, but considering that a .357 magnum makes a bigger hole than a .30 caliber, 800 foot pounds is probably enough if a careful shot is made.

With a 158 grain bullet at 1720'/sec MV, MPBR+/-3" is about 150 yards.
