I'm about to press into service my 1894c for cowboy action shooting and, as you guys know, it has the rubber butt pad, which, if not actually illegal, is at least frowned upon by cowboy action types. Does anyone have a tutorial or pattern they would share so I can fashion a simple lace-up butt cover for my Marlin just to wear to CAS matches. Nothing fancy, since I actually like the little Marlin's rubber pad.
Sorry, I don't have a pattern, but here is what you can do, I did . Get a piece of leather and wrap around the buttstock so the ends meet at the bottom, now cut it so the bottom has about a 1/2" gap between the two ends. Take another piece of leather and lay on the table and stand the butt up on it, now trace around it. now cut out this piece about an 1/8" oversize. Now take the top of both pieces and sew from the middle top down both sides to the bottom. If you sart at the bottom on one side with the stretch of the leather there is a good chance you will be off by the time you get all the way around. Use a hole punch to put holes along the bottom for laceing and lastly put it on the gun and mark how far up the stock you want it to come and trim it to length. You can hem that forward end for a more finished look but it also will make a slight bump or ridge. I left mine flat with no hem, leather don't ravel. You can also burn a brand into it or use leather die with a cut out to make it look a little fancier if you want. If you don't have leather for the lacing just go to Walmart and get a pair of leather shoe strings.

I have been using my 1894C with the rubber but plate in SASS matches for several years. The pad is completely legal, and I have never heard anyone make any comments about it or its authenticity. So don't feel obligated to cover it up.
(NCOWS may have different rules on this.)
Muleman has this skinny on making one. An easy job if you have the inclination.
Best of luck,

Might take some fitting but this would put you back a few years.

That's good to know. Maybe it was the NCOWS where I read that it was illegal. Thanks to all for your suggestions. The pad is completely legal, and I have never heard anyone make any comments about it or its authenticity.
If it's anything like the bunch I used to CAS with, they'll wait until you're ahead of them to tell you that anything is illegal.
